I was just reading in Nutrition Action, a newsletter that I absolutely adore, an article discussing 7 facts most people might not know about exercise. They were a GREAT reminder and an eye opener to keep that body in shape!
According to Physician Michael Thun, vice president emeritus for epidemiology and surveillance at the American Cancer Society, “Physical activity is central to reducing your risk of cancer”. He also notes that specifically with respect to colon cancer, the direct effect is very well documented. That information ALONE will keep my body movin’ and groovin’. What about you?
The other eye opening fact was that exercise improves insulin sensitivity. The interesting point here is the fact that STRENGHT TRAINING in addition to Aerobic conditioning is the key. According to Hurley, most physicians in this country who deal with insulin resistance and diabetes recognizes that aerobic training is helpful, but will neglect the strength training aspect! Both aerobic exercise and strength training increase the number of proteins called glucose transporters- wich move glucose from the blood into muscle and fat cells. Hurley says that the more GLUT4 you have , the better yoursells respond to insulin!
